We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ambassador Peter Moors as the new Permanent Representative of Belgium to the European Union. Ambassador Moors begins his duties on November 11, 2024, succeeding Ambassador Willem van de Voorde.
Ambassador Moors brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in various high-profile diplomatic positions throughout his career. His previous roles include Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (2020-2024), Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs* (2019-2020), Director General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (2007-2014) and Ambassador of Belgium to Greece (2004-2007). Notably, he returns to the Permanent Representation 25 years after being posted here as a young diplomat, bringing full circle his extensive career in international relations.
Ambassador Moors expresses his enthusiasm for his new role and his eagerness to work closely with the team. “I am honored to start my tenure as the new Permanent Representative. We have all witnessed the dedication and dynamism of this team during the successful Belgian presidency of the Council, and I am excited to continue this work together, fully advocating for Belgian interests in the upcoming EU legislature.”
The start of the mandate of Ambassador Moors coincides with the new EU institutional cycle, with a new Commission, a new President of the European Council, and a new Parliament.
“The Belgian and European priorities are clear and include enhancing European competitiveness, protecting and strengthening the single market, and preparing for the upcoming budget to make it fit for our common ambitions. We must continue responding effectively to the geopolitical crises, such as those at our doors in Ukraine and the Middle East.”
Ambassador Moors will be piloting a team of more than 150 motivated collaborators, coming from the various administrations, regions and communities of the country. A true Belgian, he is a fervent defender of the spirit of compromise that must deliver concrete and impactful results on the Belgian and European citizens and businesses.
“The challenges facing Europe are significant, but our country, in all its diversity, has many strengths to contribute to the strong response our citizens expect from Europe. Together with the 26 other member states and the EU institutions, I am confident we will effectively address these challenges and advance our shared goals."
