Pierre Gillon is Belgium’s new Ambassador to the Political and Security Committee of the European Union

Ambassador Pierre Gillon

Born in 1969, Ambassador Gillon embarked on his diplomatic journey in 2001, joining the Belgian Foreign Service. His early postings included significant roles at the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the EU (2002-2003), and various diplomatic missions in Rwanda, Israel, Cyprus, and the United Nations in Geneva. His expertise in Middle Eastern affairs was honed during his tenure at the Middle East and North Africa Department, where he was responsible for Iran, Iraq, and Yemen from 2009 to 2012.

From 2016 to 2020, Pierre Gillon served as the Ambassador of Belgium in Algeria, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations. His leadership and vision were further recognized when he was appointed as the Director for International Governance at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Belgium, overseeing global economy, rule of law, cyber, and outer space from 2020 to 2024. In 2023, he was appointed as Belgium’s first Ambassador for Cyber, Digital, and Tech Affairs.

Pierre Gillon’s academic credentials speak for themselves. He graduated in Business Engineering from HEC (1987-1992) and in Political Sciences from the Catholic University of Louvain (1992-1994). He holds an MSc in European Studies from the London School of Economics (1994-1995), and an MA in Public Management from the Free University of Brussels (1999-2000). He is also an alumnus of the well known French National School of Administration (ENA), where he studied from 2003 to 2005.

Before his diplomatic career, Pierre Gillon served as a parliamentary advisor at the Senate of Belgium and the House of Representatives, and as an advisor to the Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. His early career also included a role as an expert to the Commission of Enquiry on the Genocide in Rwanda.

Reflecting on his new role, Ambassador Gillon stated, “I am honored to represent Belgium at the PSC. In these challenging times, it is crucial to work collaboratively within the EU and in all multilateral fora to ensure peace and security.”

His extensive experience and dedication to public service make him a valuable asset to Belgium and the European Union as he takes on his new role at the PSC.
